History of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) |
|
|
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the world's fifth busiest passenger airport. In 2005 alone, more than 61 million people traveled through LAX. Its air cargo system also handled more than 2.1 million tons of goods in the same year. Within the five-county Southern California region, LAX is responsible for handling 70% of its passengers, 75% of its air cargo and 95% of the international passengers and cargo traffic. LAX, originally known as Mines Field, has been used as aviation field since 1928. Before commercial airline service started in 1946, it was used in World War II for military flights. The current terminal complex was constructed in 1961 and in the early 1980's LAZ added domestic and terminals, along with a second-level roadway. LAX supplies Southern California with an estimated 59,000 jobs located on or near the airport. The employment in the City of Los Angeles due to the airport is estimated to be 158,000 jobs. LAX provides many types of public transportation in forms like airport bus service, local bus lines, door-to-door shuttle van service, light rail, rental cars and taxicabs. There is a free shuttle bus that connects LAX with MTA's Green Line Light Rail as well. Shuttle service is also provided at no charge for passengers making connecting flights between terminal buildings. LAX is near many of Southern California's biggest attractions such as Knott's Berry Farm Theme Park and Universal Studios Hollywood. Disneyland is only 45 minutes away from LAX and Santa Monica Pier is 15 minutes to the Northwest. If in the mood to play a couple of holes, the Westchester Golf Course is also right by this Southern California International Airport. Many international travelers fly into LAX specifically to enjoy LA's attractions and landmarks. |
