Anaheim’s first boutique hotel, housed in a former Holiday Inn hard by the Santa Ana Freeway, is sleek, hip and crazy cool. Corporate, it’s not. Its exposed concrete floors with area rugs, funky overhead pipes and conduits, and seven-foot-high leather headboards owe as much to revisionist safari treks as to Manhattan modernism. Considering its proximity to Disneyland, of course it’s family-friendly—especially if that family happened to arrive in a Range Rover.

The high-ceilinged guest rooms, decorated with rich espresso and cream textiles that evoke Africa and Polynesia, are furnished with two queen-size beds or a king-size bed and a queen-size convertible sofa. Elsewhere in the hotel, the old-school lobby chairs, accented with low tables of chrome and glass, complement rather than contradict the deep blue neon and hot pink lava lamps in the lounge and entryway. Even Ménage’s 5,000 square feet of conference space and 2,500 square feet of breakout space avoids the ordinary, evoking the ’60s with shag carpeting and beanbag chairs on one hand and a Tuscan villa on another.

The menu at Ménage’s K’ya Restaurant features Hawai’ian-influenced Pacific Rim cuisine such as flash-fried calamari with bean sprouts and a spicy Thai sauce, hearts of palm and papaya salad, barbecued pork sliders, and fish and chips made of panko-breaded mahi mahi. Out in the courtyard, the Mist Pool Bar—set in an acre of palm trees, teak lounge chairs and private cabanas—offers a good view of Disneyland’s evening fireworks display. The pool and spa are open around the clock for relaxing late at night or lazing away an afternoon.
