Card-carrying wine snobs and newbies alike are warmly welcomed at this hidden find in downtown San Pedro. A sandwich board on the sidewalk and big banners lead you to an inviting shop with no storefront windows. Once inside, you’ll find “unique wines for everyday life” selected by the personable owners, Michael Koth and Alison Shaw. The majority of wines are from California’s central coast and valley, with a number of European and Australian selections. Their collection features smaller, independent wineries they find in their off-the-beaten-path explorations. More than three-fourths of the wines cost less than $25 a bottle. Themed tastings are held Fridays and Saturdays, there are escape-your-household-chores tastings on Sundays and many special events include wine dinners, pre-theatre tastings and a new collaboration with 7th Street Chophouse: no corkage in the dining room for wines purchased in the shop. Off the Vine also stocks special-occasion wines, artisan beers, wine accessories and domestic and imported cheeses and meats. No pretense here.
